SUMMARY:Sustainable Community Development
DESCRIPTION:The challenges affecting communities in the developing wor
ld are numerous and complex. How can development practitioners make po
sitive change among the inter-related—yet often-competing—health,
economic, infrastructure, educational, sociopolitical, and cultural sy
stems? No single discipline or organization alone can solve the multit
ude of problems facing developing communities. Neither can an interdis
ciplinary team. No solution will be sustainable without community part
icipation.\n\nWith the community as an empowered partner, solutions ca
n be found using interdisciplinary teams of engineers, physicians, pub
lic health professional, agricultural experts, entrepreneurs and busin
ess leaders, social scientists, educators, health professionals, and d
evelopment communications specialists.\n\nDescription\n\nThis i
ntensive 5-day course will focus on methods to improve the quality of
life and to prevent diseases and other health problems in the developi
ng world. An inter-disciplinary participatory approach to assessing co
mmunity needs and planning sustainable interventions is emphasized. Th
e course will combine lectures, seminars, experiential exercises and t
eam-based problem solving to integrate core topics. This course will p
rovide participants with knowledge, skills, and frameworks from multip
le disciplines:\n
\n
public health
\n
me
