The Lifeguards are Here and the Beach is Clear!

Since Saturday there has been the lowest number of garbage on the beach since my project started. I realized that Saturday was they day that the lifeguards started. I would like to think the trash has lessened because of my efforts, but it is probably that people are afraid to trash the environment when any authority is around and that is why people have been leaving less garbage.

Disturbing Find

Just as the garbage for my beach clean up project started to see a decline, there was a sudden jump in the numbers of trash. Not only has the amount of garbage increased, but what I have been finding has become more disturbing. Yesterday I came across a very disturbing ear in the sand. I was not really sure what it really was. Is this some kind of sick joke? It is a fake ear, but at first sight it seemed grotesquely real. First Week

It seems that people really appreciate me cleaning the beach. I have gotten comments every day from people. Today someone said that it is nice that someone cares. I have also witnessed other people collecting garbage. The amount of garbage has gone down. I have a feeling that there will always be people who trash this beach, but at least so far there has been less trash.

Day One

Today was the first day of my beach clean up project. I was going to clean the beach for five minutes, but that five minutes quickly turned into ten. I found 63 pieces of trash and 8 pieces that I consider hazardous. When I was near done, a nice couple started talking to me asking what I was doing. I told them about my project. They couldn't believe how much trash I had found. I reused shopping bags that I found and filled two of them. When I was walking away I heard the couple say to their son… Continue

Proposal

I am going to pick up garbage on the beach from 6th street to 8th street in Ship Bottom, New Jersey five to seven times a week at the same time each day for my environmental practice. As the summer is approaching I am noticing more and more garbage on the beach. There are garbage cans, but people are slobs and don’t always use them. My son is a one year old who crawls all over the beach. He picks up everything he finds, including garbage. This garbage is a hazard to people, animals, and the over… Continue
