Willie Lafferty Progress

As the clock reaches the end of day 13, I have stuck with my goal. Friday was the toughest day so far. My uncle was in town for a ski team reunion, which he invited me too. At the event there was tenderloin served with sweet and red potatoes, broccoli and glazed carrots. Everyone I knew there asked me how I liked the tenderloin and I would tell them the story of my 30 day religion. All said "too bad, it was delicious," plus I would couldn't have any of the sauces because chicken stock was used.… Continue

Willie Lafferty After a week

Today is the start of the second week. I was quite proud I made it through the weekend with out eating meat. Even under the effects of things that impair decisions I was still able to choose the vegetarian option. It has taken longer to order and pick out groceries because I have to search for the vegetarian meal. They are not right smack in the center of grocery store with lights highlighting their colorful packaging. They are found in corners and in the bottom of aisles. Since I still eat chee… Continue

Brad Bingham Proposal: Eliminate Local Driving

The environmental practice I plan on adopting this month will be to ride my bike, walk, and run as much as possible instead of driving my car. I hope to do this as much as possible, which I imagine will be multiple times per day. This is an environmental friendly action because I will be reducing the gasoline and oil I am using, as well as reducing carbon emissions. I believe this will improve my relationship with the environment because I will know I am reducing my carbon emission, I will be gi… Continue

Leonard Sun First P: Veganism

For my environmental practice I will continue my practice of veganism that I have been practicing for two years. This is environmental because animal agriculture requires a heavy amount of land, water, and other resources that would be used for human consumption. Animal waste is also a cause of pollution to our groundwater and rivers and is a cause of acid rain from ammonia emissions, greenhouse gas production, and depletion of aquifers for irrigation. Animal agriculture also accelerates topsoil… Continue

Phil Carson The market for renewables and other news

Thought you'd be interested in some recent market forecasts that hold optimism and note the complexities for the future of renewables. Two reports by Boulder-based Pike Research capture the shape of the wind turbine and micro-grid markets, thanks to founder and principal Clint Wheelock. We’ll feature a chat with Wheelock in a future blog. Wheelock has been research director at a number of high-powered market analysis firms over the past decade and has a team of analysts looking at renewable en… Continue

Phil Carson Help for job seekers and a few thoughts

Looking forward to my Intro to Solar Electricity class coming up Nov. 14-15, through the Sustainable Practices program. If you’re signed up and want to share some thoughts, give me a shout here on Ning. Or we’ll see you there. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a 52-year-old journalist (hold the laughter, please!) recently liberated from a job in the wireless telecom field. This has given me the opportunity to take the plunge in a more promising direction with renewable energy and other sustainable… Continue

Willie Lafferty First day of being a vegetarian

Today I started my project. As the first day ends, I'm only excited that I have 29 days left. It was hard to feel full/satisfied through-out the day. I ate a normal breakfast of oatmeal lunch was a burrito. I had to read the rest of the menu at the student daily in the business library, I found the black bean, cheese, egg and rice burrito. For dinner I had some tofu and salad. The salad was good cause that is easy to make, greens and dressing. The tofu, I just don't know how to cook. Tomorrow mo… Continue

Willie Lafferty My first P

I will adopt the environmental practice for being a vegetarian. I will do this by not eating meat, but will continue with egg and dairy, which is a lacto-ovo vegetarian. I will not eat meat for thirty days beginning on October 27th, so the period ends on Thanksgiving, a day of feastin'. This is 'environmental' because of how animals are treated in stockyards; the crowded pens, feces all around which release methane, dusting in the summer mud in the winter, fed corn which isn't part of there diet… Continue

3BL Media Sustainability Scorecard, Cradle to Cradle, Sustainable Business Institute, Responsibility Standards, Code of Conduct, 3BL

What does our tree free, compostable packaging have to do with your healthy lifestyle?...EVERYTHING. We knew this on a gut feeling level – but scientific proof and ‘the bottom line’ are often easier to track and convey in business conversations. Therefore, in the 3rd Quarter of 2009 we prioritized creating an internal Sustainability Scorecard with the help of a top consultant from the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB.… Continue

3BL Media Five Inspiring Finalists Selected For the “S Contest”

The top five finalists have been selected in SDialogue’s $10,000 “S Contest,” and voting has now begun. Over 40 entries were received and narrowed down to the list of five finalists. Perry Goldschein, partner at SDialogue stated: “It was a tough job choosing finalists due to the high quality of the responses, and moving stories. Our main criterion was the amount of positive, ongo… Continue

Gabriel Nielsen project proposal

I have a 7 month old daughter. My wife and I have purchased washable diapers. However, we have discontinued using them because we live in the mountains and we do not have laundry facilities at our house. My wife used to bring the diapers to my mothers, but that wasn't worth it for her. For a while now we have been using disposable diapers because it is easier. Therefore, I have decided to wash the diapers every week on tuesdays after my morning class at a laundry mat in town, or if I can handle… Continue

Sara Plampin Environmental Practice Proposal

For my Environmental Practice, I will become a vegetarian. This means eating no meat at all, which is a change for me because I probably eat meat an average of two meals a day. I will still eat dairy products and eggs, because they are necessary for protein and difficult to avoid, but I will attempt to limit this consumption to organic milk and cage-free eggs. To do this I will have to do some research to determine which milk and egg brands are considered most environmentally friendly, and why.… Continue

Tara Krieble Environmental Practice Proposal

The practice I would like to adopt is to give up packaged baby food for 30 days. This would be a huge adjustment that would affect my life several times every day. My daughter currently subsists on mostly jarred organic baby food, packaged snacks such as baby puffs and crackers, and whole milk. She eats a varied and nutritionally sound diet but the amount of packaging (especially small glass jars and plastic food tubs) we go through is saddening. Although we recycle most of what we use, the proc… Continue

Jody Johnson Heating in winter

As a homeowner, I believe it is our duty to provide the cleanest air for our family. Filters added to heat registers and furnaces should help. Also if you have a humidifier running in the winter, Humidifier filters would help keep the inside air moist. Air purifiers are important too if they are large enough to clean air in the whole house. We also like clean water so we… Continue

Phil Carson Inside Namasté Solar Electric: the "Grid-Tied Solar Photovoltaics" class

“Namasté Solar Electric” became a household word in February when founder Blake Jones took President Obama to the roof of Denver’s Museum of Science and Nature to see the solar panels Namaste had installed. What a coup for the company’s profile and, indeed, for all those who recognize that a national focus on renewables will drive innovation and lower our carbon footprint as it builds energy independence and bolsters national security. Jones’ brief blog on that watershed event is here: http:/… Continue

Phil Carson anyone out there on 'sustainable jobs' and cliff dwellings?

My two questions are unrelated. First off, here's a question on sustainability as it applies to jobs. In preparing for this weekend's "Grid-tied Solar Photovoltaics" class, I was reminded that sustainability applies to jobs as well as energy practices. That means that while I've taken advantage of reasonably well-paying jobs, those positions have also come with substantial risk. And going forward, having taken a hit from this economy, I'd be willing to take a job that paid less than past jobs… Continue

Phil Carson The more things change, the more they stay the same...

That's the theme of my initial plunge into renewables. Typically, this phrase is a cliched downer, but in my case it's actually grounds for optimism. Here's a little more insight on what one 52-year-old journalist -- that's me (a tagline that, admittedly, screams "extinction") -- is encountering as I attempt to transform myself for employment in the renewables field. First off, the renewables field is alot like other fields in terms of the skills and roles in need. Your current skills -- make… Continue

Phil Carson My new direction: renewable energy

Thought I'd share a few reflections on CU's Sustainable Practices program from my personal perspective. Long story short, my first class -- a two-day "Energy Solutions for Existing Homes," this past Aug. 14-15 -- was a great way to start. First, I'm a homeowner who wants to use all resources wisely, particularly the costly ones such as energy that I need to run my home. You know the drill: fossil fuels are finite, carbon-emitting and the cause of global conflicts. And as a journalist/writer, I… Continue

Brittany Shade The Four P's: Proposal

For my environmental practice, I will stop using plastic bags when shopping for groceries as well as other items. I will either carry my items without a bag or bring my own cloth bag. My plan is to do this every time I go shopping. This is environmental because it produces less trash and will help reduce the use of landfills; it is thought to take up to 1.000 years for a plastic bag to fully decompose. This is a considerable change in my life because every visit to the store I come home with bag… Continue
