I will adopt the environmental practice for being a vegetarian. I will do this by not eating meat, but will continue with egg and dairy, which is a lacto-ovo vegetarian. I will not eat meat for thirty days beginning on October 27th, so the period ends on Thanksgiving, a day of feastin'. This is 'environmental' because of how animals are treated in stockyards; the crowded pens, feces all around which release methane, dusting in the summer mud in the winter, fed corn which isn't part of there diet to fatten them, given shots to combat the effects of over corn consumption and being fed animal product, to name a few. I won't be contributing to the effects described above. I eat multiple meat products a day, so it will be a major change in my diet. I will keep a journal to record how I feel over the thirty day period. Hopefully, I can stay the course and not give in to eating a steak. Maybe eat a snickers instead since chocolate releases hormones to make us feel better. I will try to remember quotes my friends say at my expense, watch the disappointment in their eyes. I may feel a change in the way I see my surrounding environment and record it in my journal. To track the information quantitively I will look at the cost of being a vegetarian and cost of eating meat. Another quantitive test will be to see if I can reach one gram of protein for each pound of my body weight. My success will come from spending a day without eating meat, failure is not an option. I will calculate my carbon footprint as a carnivore and vegetarian. The secondary measure stated in the guidelines are exactly what I will be able to analyze; pounds of carbon not emitted and the money saved. The use of charts and photos will help illustrate my new found beliefs.
