The environmental practice I plan on adopting this month will be to ride my bike, walk, and run as much as possible instead of driving my car. I hope to do this as much as possible, which I imagine will be multiple times per day. This is an environmental friendly action because I will be reducing the gasoline and oil I am using, as well as reducing carbon emissions. I believe this will improve my relationship with the environment because I will know I am reducing my carbon emission, I will be given the opportunity to spend some more time outside, as well as saving money in car wear and gasoline. This will change my life because I will not have the convenience of being able to jump in my car and run errands, it will take more planning. I believe the experience will be rewarding and will change my habits longer than one month.
I plan on not driving on any trips within Boulder county, no matter the weather. The only times I can foresee driving within Boulder would be unexpected or rush trips. I cannot imagine my lack of driving will affect others very much, besides having others walk or ride bikes to places with me. I will ask the people close to me how they feel about my project, and what the negative and positive effects are from avoiding driving. I also plan on writing down my own experiences, such as if I would rather be driving, or if the extra time spent outdoors has positive effects on me.
To track my progress quantitatively, I will estimate the amount of miles I reduced my driving, and quantify the amount of carbon emissions saved. I will decide if my effect was a success or failure depending on how much my carbon footprint was reduced, and how I feel during the practice. I will also try to estimate how much the effect would be if everyone reduced their driving, and calculated the effect it would have on our earth. I will calculate the amount of money I will have saved to see my practices effects on other areas of my life. I plan on depicting my study scientifically through charts, tables, and statistics. I will also have daily descriptions of my practice, explaining how I feel, the weather, and any troubles I am having.
